‘El Chapo’ Joaquin Guzman, Mexican Drug Kingpin Sentenced To Life In Us Prison – Federal judge in Brooklyn, New York, has sentenced Mexican drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán to life in prison plus 30 years and was ordered to pay $12.6 billion in forfeiture on Wednesday.

“The horrific nature and circumstances of the defendant’s offense, his history and characteristics and the fact that the defendant committed some of the most serious crimes under federal law make a life sentence warranted,” Federal prosecutors wrote.
What ‘El Chapo’ Joaquin Guzman Said In Court:
‘El Chapo’ Joaquin Guzman, Mexican Drug Kingpin, spoke for about 10 minutes in court before the sentence was handed down and called out issues with the jury.
“There was no justice here,” he said in Spanish, “It’s been torture, the most inhumane situation I have lived in my entire life,” he said. “It has been physical, emotional and mental torture.”
“In order to sleep I have to use plugs in my ears made of toilet paper,” Guzman said.
Guzman complained that his wife Emma Coronel has not been able to visit him. “I have not been able to hug my daughters. It has been psychological, emotional, mental torture 24 hours a day.” He called his confinement “the most inhumane situation I’ve ever been in.” Guzman told he had been “forced to drink unsanitary water.”
“My case was stained and you denied me a fair trial when the whole world was watching,” Guzman said in court through an interpreter. “When I was extradited to the United States, I expected to have a fair trial, but what happened was exactly the opposite.”
Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski said Wednesday. said, “The long road that led ‘El Chapo’ Guzman from the mountains of Sinaloa to the courthouse was paved with death, drugs and destruction, but it ended today with justice,”
“This case was simply an inquisition. It was a show trial, and how it ended is exactly perfect for that description,” defense attorney Jeffrey Lichtman said. He said the government’s witnesses had included “lunatics and sociopaths and psychopaths” and that “up to five jurors broke the law — violated the law while they were judging Mr. Guzmán for crimes.”
Brian Bezczkowski, the Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice said. “If you pump hundreds of thousands of tons of cocaine and other drugs into our country, we will find you, we will extricate you, we will prosecute you, and we will bring you to justice.”
