Former Presidential Candidate Herman Cain Dies At 74 | Cause Of Death:
Herman Cain, the former chief executive of Godfather’s Pizza, ran for the Republican nomination for president in 2012, died after a battle with COVID-19.
Cain’s death was announced Thursday on his website and social media accounts. Early this month, he said he had been hospitalised in the Atlanta area.
“Herman Cain – our boss, our friend, like a father to so many of us – has passed away,” wrote Dan Calabrese, the editor of Cain’s website.
“Herman was 74. Although he was basically pretty healthy in recent years, he was still in a high-risk group because of his history with cancer,” he continued.
Herman Cain, 74, tested positive for the virus on June 29, and went to the hospital in Atlanta two days later.
Cain’s Twitter account said this week he was being treated with oxygen in his lungs. It is unknown where Cain contracted the virus. “You’re never ready for the kind of news we are grappling with this morning. But we have no choice but to seek and find God’s strength and comfort to deal,” his official Twitter account said Thursday.
As a co-chair of Black Voices for Trump, Herman Cain attended President Donald Trump’s controversial rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the end of June, but he did not wear a mask. He posted a picture of himself and other attendees in close proximity and without wearing any masks.
“We honestly have no idea where he contracted it. I realise people will speculate about the Tulsa rally, but Herman did a lot of travelling the past week, including to Arizona where cases are spiking,” Dan Calabrese, who has been editor of HermanCain.com since 2012, said in a post earlier this month announcing Cain’s Covid-19 diagnosis.
Local health officials had called for the event’s cancellation out of fears it could become a super-spreader event, and the head of the Tulsa Health Department later acknowledged the rally and surrounding protests had likely contributed to a surge in cases in Tulsa.
Several Trump campaign staffers and Secret Services employees tested positive for COVID-19 before the rally and self-quarantined.
