Gilroy Garlic Festival Shooting: At Least 4 Dead, 15 Wounded In Northern California:
One gunman opened fire Sunday evening during the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Northern California, authorities said.
The shooting occurred at the end of the final day of the Gilroy Garlic Festival in a city some 80 miles southeast of San Francisco.
The Gilroy Garlic Festival, located in northern California, has been an annual event for 41 years. The three-day festival featuring food, cooking competitions and music regularly attracts thousands of attendees to the town, known for its garlic production.
Gilroy Garlic Festival Shooting Suspect:
Gilroy police quickly shot and killed the gunman.
Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee said the shooter also was killed. He was shot and killed by officers who engaged him within one minute of the shooting, Smithee said. A manhunt is underway for a possible second suspect, Smithee said. That person’s role in the shooting is unclear, he said. Neither the shooter nor the second suspect have been identified.
The suspect entered the festival by cutting through a fence, officials said.
“The city of Gilroy is an incredible community, and we have incredible people here,” Smithee said. “It takes literally thousands of our residents that volunteer their time to come put this on for people, and to raise funds for all of our community-based organizations and charities and whatnot, and you can’t say that about a lot of communities.”
video show pandemonium, with people running, hiding behind tents, crawling under tables or climbing fences to escape the gunfire.
Who Were Killed And Injured In Shooting At Gilroy Garlic Festival:
The dead include six-year-old Stephen Luciano Romero, of San Jose, authorities said. Stephen Romero was killed at the festival his grandmother Maribel Romero told.
“I am deeply saddened by the news of Steven Romero,” Gilroy City Council Member Fred Tovar addressed the death of the child in statement. “I pray that God will grant his family strength.
Six people were transported to St. Louise Regional Hospital and another five were transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center — all suffering from gunshot wounds — said Joy Alexiou, a spokeswoman for the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
Police shot and killed one gunman, who was wielding heard in videos on social media, “some kind of rifle,” shortly after he began firing.
What Have Witnesses Told:
A 7-years-old boy said after the shooting happened, “I thought I was going to die”.
“a semi-automatic going off really close when the shooting unfolded. As soon as the gunfire started, everybody scattered and people were yelling for their kids,” the witness told.
A survivor of the Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting in California says he heard “two shots” ring out at the same time the music started for a concert at the event, “So I thought it was, like, an opening act for the concert.”
“My little one,” San Jose resident Angela Escarcega said of her 9-year-old son. “He’s ready to go home.”
“We were just leaving and we saw a guy with a bandana wrapped around his leg because he got shot. And there were people on the ground, crying,” Evenny Reyes, a 13-year-old Gilroy resident said. “There was a little kid hurt on the ground. People were throwing tables and cutting fences to get out.”
