Gladys Knight The National Anthem at The Super Bowl 2019 – The seven-time Grammy winner, 74, Gladys Knight performed with a resplendent rendition of the national anthem to help kick off Super Bowl LIII Sunday night.
Gladys Knight The National Anthem at The Super Bowl 2019:
The legendary singer Gladys Knight said, “I am proud to use my voice to unite and represent our country in my hometown of Atlanta,” and also said, “It is unfortunate that our national anthem has been dragged into this debate when the distinctive senses of the national anthem and fighting for justice should each stand alone,”
Knight’s appearance came amid the NFL’s ongoing controversy involving kneeling players and the national anthem. Gladys Knight, 74, had defended her decision to perform, saying she wanted to “give the anthem back its voice” and citing her lifelong civil-rights work.
Knight told, “No matter who chooses to deflect with this narrative and continue to mix these two in the same message, it is not so and cannot be made so by anyone speaking it. I pray that this National Anthem will bring us all together in a way never before witnessed and we can move forward and untangle these truths which mean so much to all of us.”
