The Berlin Wall, a concrete barrier that physically and ideologically divided Berlin and restricted travel for 28 years cutting off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany, including East Berlin.
“Tor auf!” (“Open the gate!”) roared the people gathered at the Berlin Wall on this evening in 1989 for an end to 28 years ( from 1961 to 1989 ) of strict travel restrictions.
Construction of the Berlin Wall was started by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) on 13 August 1961.

After some time before midnight, Finally, at 10:45 p.m. on November 9, Harald Jäger, the commander in charge of the Bornholmer Street checkpoint gave the order to open the gate.
Within the next few days, 2 million jubilant Germans crossed the border, the restriction some singing, dancing, and toasting the start of a new era while others started physically dismantling the Berlin Wall.
