Olga Ladyzhenskaya was born on 7 March 1922 in Kologriv, RSFSR and grew up in the small town of Kologriv. In 1937 her father was arrested by the NKVD and executed as an “enemy of the people”. In 1943 Olga Ladyzhenskaya took admission in Moscow University and graduated in 1947 and kept her doctoral thesis in 1953. She taught at the university in Leningrad and at the Steklov Institute. Ladyzhenskaya was on the shortlist for potential recipients for the 1958 Fields Medal, won awarded to Klaus Roth and Rene Thom. A member of the St. Petersburg Mathematical Society since 1959, she became its president in 1990. Beyond mathematics, she was also a lover of nature and the arts.
