Today’s Doodle honors the Scottish chemist Sir William Ramsey, who found helium while searching for argon. Sir William Ramsey’s whose research led to the discovery of an unknown group of elements known as the noble gases which result to groundbreaking advances in thermodynamics and nuclear physics.
Sir William Ramsay, who was born at 2 Clifton Street in Glasgow on 2 October 1852, the son of civil engineer and surveyor, William C. Ramsay, and his wife, Catherine Robertson, discovered the noble gases and received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1904 “in recognition of his services in the discovery of the inert gaseous elements in air”
