John Witherspoon, who was best known for his role as the crotchety dad in the Friday films, is survived by his wife, Angela, and his two sons, John David (“J.D.”) and Alexander.
Witherspoon’s family confirmed the news in a statement on social media, saying, “It is with deep sadness we have to tweet this, but our husband & father John Witherspoon has passed away. He was a Legend in the entertainment industry, and a father figure to all who watched him over the years. We love you “POPS” always & forever.”

Ice Cube, who was Witherspoon’s onscreen son, Craig, in 1995’s “Friday”, wrote in a tweet, “I’m devastated over the passing of John Witherspoon. Life won’t be as funny without him.”
Born on January 27, 1942, in Detroit, Michigan, Witherspoon kicked off his career as a stand-up comedian and made his television debut in the 1970s, appearing in shows including the detective series “Barnaby Jones,” in which she played a counselor at a camp for drug-addicted children alongside a young Sean Penn in Penn’s first credited role.
Witherspoon appeared in many feature films as comedian, including Friday (and its sequel Next Friday) as well as Hollywood Shuffle, I’m Gonna Get You Sucka, Bird, Vampire in Brooklyn, and The Meteor Man.
