Jose Antonio Reyes’ boyhood club Sevilla have announced in a statement on Saturday, “We couldn’t be confirming worse news. Beloved Sevilla star Jose Antonio Reyes has died in a traffic collision. Rest in peace.”
Arsenal tweeted that “Everyone at Arsenal is devastated by the shocking news that our former player Jose Antonio Reyes has died in a traffic collision in Spain. Rest in peace, Jose.”
The car accident resulted Jose Antonio La Perla Reyes’ death, happened in his hometown Utrera, a province of Seville, on Saturday morning.
Because of the death, the Spanish football federation postponed the seven second-division matches that were scheduled to be played on Sunday.
“The RFEF (Real Federación Española de Fútbol) expresses its condolences for the death of José Antonio Reyes. From the RCD Espanyol we want to express our deepest condolences and send all our support to the family and those of Seville,” said the club.
“Wonderful player, superb team mate and exceptional human being,” Henry tweeted.
Jose Antonio Reyes:
Jose Antonio Reyesl debut for Sevilla at only 16, signing for England’s Arsenal in January 2004. He represented the two largest clubs in Madrid, Real and Atlético Madrid, and winning La Liga with the former. He also won the Europa League three times for a record total of five. He played nine matches for Extremadura UD before his death at the age of 35 in a car crash on 1 June 2019.
Reyes earned 21 caps for Spain, and represented the nation at the 2006 World Cup. He also appeared once for the Andalusia autonomous team in 2013.
