Chance the Rapper revealed the long love story with his wife Kirsten Corley:
So this photo was taken on the day that I first met my wife! In the year 2003, my mom used to work as a real estate agent at a black owned franchise called Re/Max Exclusive Properties. One night, she took, my dad and my brother and Ito one of her office parties to get better acquainted with her co-workers. I was 9 yrs old at the time so I was prolly oblivious to what was going on and had no say in how I spent my evenings, anyway. That being said I was probably playing a gameboy in a corner or eating candy, initially unimpressed by my surroundings. But THEN… out of nowhere, we were all told to make room, to spread out and make a circle for a presentation. This is where my memory comes back in a photographic manner. We were instructed to make way for an exclusive performance by DESTINY’s CHILD!!
This office full of adults, Taylor and myself formed a semicircle and from the back stepped out 3 young girls. Who were not Destiny’s Child. Brief pause while they got in position and crouched with their heads down before the music starts. You hear people shushing each other. Drums come in lightly. Bass starts to bounce in 3’s. BUM, BUMBUM… Murmurs from the crowd start to die down. BUM, BUMBUM. All three heads begin to raise slowly in unison. They look like angels. “CHARLIE’s ANGELS”. BUM… BUMBUM. I can now see they’re all a little bit older than me, but also there’s a slight relief in knowing there are other kids at the party. “QUESTION. TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT ME” Now I’m locking eyes with the prettiest girl I ever seen in my almost-a-decade of life on earth. And I promise I can feel how I
I really shouldn’t even say locked eyes cause really, I was just staring at her; as she and her girls were conquering this choreography and mastering the art of lip-synching in a way even the most professional performers have yet to accomplish. My dad nudges my shoulder. At this age I had already won 2 school-wide talent shows for dancing. I had performed a michael jackson tribute at kindergarten graduation and ever since my father would thrust me into dancing on the spot to prove to company or hosts that I was an “entertainer”. He was proud. But I was always nervous. Even though I had it in me, it was always traumatic for me to be around my dad and any adults cause when music came on cause I knew there was a possibility he might say “Chance do that lil dance you and ya friends be doin”. “Son show em the tootsie roll”. Young me was shy.
He nudges me again. “Son go out there. Show em what you got.” This wasn’t the time or place. Not just because it wasn’t my party, not because it was their moment to dance, not even cause I was nervous about dancing in front of folks. Its cause I knew I was gonna marry that girl. And I aint wanna jump the gun. So I shook my head with anxiety, moved to the back of the crowd and never even introduced myself. 16 years later it’s happening This wknd is the time, and the place is my wedding. I’m gonna dance with my wife because this is my destiny.
