Los Angeles Lakers President of Basketball Operations, Magic Johnson announced Tuesday that he was stepping down from his role.
Magic Johnson Leaving His Role As Los Angeles Lakers President Of Basketball Operations:
Magic Johnson made the announcement Tuesday after coach Luke Walton’s pregame comments, and before the start of the Lakers-Portland Trail Blazers game at Staples Center.
Magic Johnson said,”I like to be free, I’ve got a great life… what am I doing? I’ve got a beautiful life. I’m gonna go back to that beautiful life. I’m looking forward to it. I want to always preserve our relationship with her, and I think I had more fun when I was able to be the big brother and ambassador. Somebody is going to have to tell my boss, ’cause I know she’s going to be sick, but I know I couldn’t face her face-to-face and tell her.”
The Lakers issued a statement in connection with President Magic Johnson’s announcement, “deeply grateful to Magic for all he has done as a player, an ambassador and an executive. They will work in a measured and methodical fashion to make the right moves for the future of our organization, We thank (Johnson) for his work these past two years as our President of Basketball Operations and wish him, Cookie, Andre, EJ and Elisa all the best with their next steps,” the statement said. “He will always be not only a Lakers icon, but our family.”
Johnson told, “Next year we’re going to be good. If we get another one of these guys we’re going to be really good.” He also said, “It’s hard when you love an organization the way I love this organization. It’s hard when you love a person like I love Jeanie. I don’t want to hurt her. And I love Luke.”
“I thought Wednesday about Dwyane Wade retiring, and I can’t even tweet that out or be there,” Johnson said. “Serena Williams called me a week ago and said, ‘Will you mentor me and be on my advisory board?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, I’m going to do that.’
Magic Johnson said, “I don’t want to put her in the middle of us, even though she said, ‘Hey, you do what you wanna do.’ I know she has great love for him and great love for me.”
It was reported that Buss had given Johnson her permission to fire Walton before the Lakers’ president of basketball operations ultimately decided to step down instead.
