Melissa Etheridge, 58, mourned her son in a social media post on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old died as a result of opioid addiction, according to two tweets Wednesday from the singer-songwriter’s account.
“Today I joined the hundreds of thousands of families who have lost loved ones to opioid addiction,” Etheridge wrote on Twitter. “My son Beckett, who was just 21, struggled to overcome his addiction and finally succumbed to it today. He will be missed by those who loved him, his family and friends.
“My heart is broken,” she continued. “I am grateful for those who have reached out with condolences and I feel their love and sincere grief. We struggle with what else we could have done to save him, and in the end we know he is out of the pain now. I will sing again, soon. It has always healed me.”

Grammy winner Melissa Etheridge and filmmaker Julie Cypher, who met in 1988 during a video shoot, had two children together during their partnership — a daughter, Bailey, in February 1997 and Beckett on Nov. 18 of the following year.
As the children were born to Cypher via artificial insemination, people speculated about who was the sperm donor for their children. In 2000, the couple revealed the biological father was Rock and Roll Hall of Famer David Crosby.
Melissa Etheridge and Julie Cypher’s relationship ended in 2000.
The singer also has 13-year-old twins — son Miller and daughter Johnnie, from her relationship with Tammy Lynn Michaels.
