Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey Gets Booed Out Of Protest After Refusing To Defund And Abolish Police:

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey was met with a chorus of boos on Saturday after telling a group of demonstrators he didn’t support the “full abolition” of the police department, following George Floyd’s fatal encounter with law enforcement.

Thousands of protesters peacefully took to Minneapolis streets Saturday, June 6, for a rally – which organized by the local advocacy group Black Visions.

The protest marched to Frey’s home and called on him to come out to address the crowd.

When the mayor was later spotted in the crowd, protesters asked Frey directly whether he would commit to de-funding the Minneapolis Police Department.

“It’s important that we hear this, because if y’all don’t know, he’s up for reelection next year,” the organizer told the crowd. “And if he says ‘no,’ guess what the f*ck we’re going to do next year.”

One of the protest leaders asked Jacob Frey to answer “yes or no” to whether he would commit to defunding the Minneapolis Police Department, to which he answered, ‘I do not support the full abolition of the police department.’

Jacob Frey added that he favored police reforms.

The organizer said, “Get the f**k outta here” … and chants of “Go home Jacob” went up from the crowd, and that he did.

Frey then departed, walking past multiple raised middle fingers.

Black Visions isn’t the only group calling for the defunding of America’s police, many other groups and protesters are also campaigning for it.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, 38, a former civil rights attorney who took office two years ago vowing to repair the police department’s strained relations with minorities, was showered with angry chants of “Go home, Jacob, go home,” and “Shame, shame,” as he stalked away through the crowd, head bowed.

It’s an unexpected turn for the 38-year-old mayor, who immediately decried the deadly use of force in George Floyd’s May 25 arrest as unjustified.

Frey was also kneeling and weeping next to George Floyd’s casket during Thursday’s emotional funeral service.

“The Minneapolis Police Department is rotten to the root and so when we dismantle it, we get rid of that cancer and we allow for something beautiful to rise,” Democratic U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar said.

The Minneapolis City Council voted to ban police officers from using chokeholds and neck restraints, and strengthened rules for officers to intervene if a colleague is using excessive force, On Friday, June 5. The action is waiting on a judge’s approval.
