Noah Cyrus, 20, who released the song “Young & Sad” off her EP “The End of Everything” last week, has now opened up about its connection to her older sister Miley Cyrus.
The 20-year-old star broke down in tears at one point, while opening up about the difficulties she faced growing up alongside her famous sibling as she discussed the meaning behind her new track “Young & Sad,” during an Instagram Live on Saturday.
The song, which features on her brand new EP “The End of Everything,” released on Friday, featuring lyrics which include: “My sister’s like sunshine, bringing good light wherever she’ll go/ and I was born to rain clouds, blessed in her shadows.”
Noah Cyrus, who is seven years younger than Miley, elaborated on the meaning behind the lyrics and at one point broke down as she reflected on the criticism she has received over the years, during the live.
Speaking to Pop Crave, Noah Cyrus said: “I think just the message in the second verse, being born in the family I was in, everyone gave me such a hard time for having a hard time being Miley’s little sister. But you know, I always felt like I was that person that no one gave a s**t about due to what people said to me online.”
Noah Cyrus Reveals It Was ‘Absolutely Unbearable’ Growing Up As Miley Cyrus’ Younger Sister | Noah Cyrus Had A Tough Time Being Miley’s Little Sister:
Noah went on: “It was absolutely unbearable. And that’s why I write, ‘My sister’s like sunshine / Always bringing good light wherever she will go / And I was born to rain clouds / When they blew the flame out / Blessed in her shadows.’ Because, that’s why everybody always says to me, that no matter what, I was going to be in that shadow.”
Noah admitted she “always believed” she’d be in Miley’s shadow and her worries had been a “big part” of her life for years.
“That was something I heard my whole life, every single day, my whole life. It was either that or that I wasn’t enough in some way, whether it was the way I look or the way I am,” Noah said.
“Like I said the other day, sometimes I feel like I don’t even breathe right sometimes.”
Noah said that she wanted to open up about this topic “once and for all,” given that it has been a big struggle for her childhood, but also said that she probably won’t talk about this issue anymore.
“Everybody always says you’re giving the people power by seeing it, but I can’t control seeing it,” Noah said.
“You guys are young, you know the internet. It’s been really tough on me, so that song is just pretty tough to get through.”
