Elmore Rual “Rip” Torn Jr. was born in Temple, Texas, on February 6, 1931, the son of Elmore Rual “Tiger” Torn Sr. and Thelma Mary Torn. He was an American actor, voice artist, and comedian. Torn, who appeared with Gregory Peck in 1959’s “Pork Chop Hill” and Paul Newman in 1962’s “Sweet Bird of Youth,” was best known for playing late-night talk show producer Arthur on HBO’s “The Larry Sanders Show” in the 1990s.
Rip Torn debuted in 1956 with an uncredited role in “Baby Doll.” His first credited film role came in 1957 in “Time Limit,” in which he played a former prisoner of war who breaks down at a court-martial. His acting including the role of Artie the producer on The Larry Sanders Show, for which he was nominated for six Emmy Awards, winning in 1996. He received an Oscar nomination for best-supporting actor for his role in 1983’s “Cross Creek.”
Torn first married to actress Ann Wedgeworth lasted from 1956 to 1961. The couple had a daughter, Danae Torn.
In 1963, Torn again married Geraldine Page, and they remained married until Geraldine Page’s death in 1987. They had a daughter, actress Angelica Page, and twin sons: actor Tony Torn, and Jon Torn.
Now in third time Torn married actress Amy Wright in 1989. They had two children, Katie and Claire Torn.
