Police got a call around 10:04 PM Sunday in response to a car accident at the intersection of Northampton Boulevard and Baker Road. The man who had been hit by a vehicle who was in really bad shape and that man was identified as Pernell Whitaker, 55, of Norfolk, Va.
The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene after the accident, according to police, and the case is being investigated by the department’s Fatal Accident Crash Team.
On July 14, 2019, Sunday night Pernell Whitaker was crossing the road in Virginia Beach, at the intersection of Northampton Boulevard and Baker Road, when he was struck and killed by a vehicle.
Emergency medical team at the scene tried to resuscitate Whitaker even performing CPR on him but unfortunately, Whitaker succumbed to his injuries and died.
The investigation is still ongoing. However, there is no clue appear that drugs/alcohol or speed were factors in the crash.
Whitaker’s youngest son, Devon, told on Monday morning that “My father was wearing dark clothes, the road was dark and the driver didn’t see him.”

Pernell Whitaker was born on January 2, 1964. He was an American professional boxer whose amazing boxing competed career from 1984 to 2001, and subsequently worked as a boxing trainer. He began at the age of nine. He had 214 amateur fights, winning 201, 91 of them by knockouts. Whitaker was a four-time world boxing champion who won titles at the lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight and light middleweight.
In 1989, Ring magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America titled Whitaker the fighter of the year. Ring magazine also considered as one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world from 1993 to 1997.
In June 2002, Whitaker was convicted of cocaine possession after a judge found he violated the terms of a previous sentence by overdosing on cocaine in March.
In 1984, Whitaker represented the U.S. in the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. He won the gold medal in the lightweight competition defeating Luis Ortiz. He also won a gold medal at the 1983 Pan American Games in Caracas and a silver medal in the 1982 World Championships in Munich.
Pernell Whitaker married Rovanda Anthony on December 21, 1985 in the boxing ring at the Virginia Beach Pavilion Convention Center. They separated later. They had four children together: Dominique, the late Pernell Jr., Dantavious, and Devon. Whitaker also had a daughter, Tiara, from a prior relationship.
