Jeff Austin’s death was announced in a statement released in the Yonder Mountain String Band Facebook account, the band which he co-founded and performed from 1998 to 2013.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a beloved family member, mandolinist, singer, songwriter and founder of The Jeff Austin Band, and Yonder Mountain String Band, Jeff Austin. Austin passed away June 24, 2019 in Seattle, Washington. He was son of Eileen Austin, husband to Devlyn, and father to Lily Rose (12), Penelope (5), and Jude Patrick (2). A cause of Jeff Austin’s death was not given.
The mandolinist’s booking manager, Barron Ruth, told that Jeff Austin passed Sunday after being put into a medically induced coma.
“We are saddened to report that we have lost our brother Jeff Austin,” read a statement from Yonder on Facebook. “Remembering the incredible times and magical moments puts us at a profound loss for words. While we honor his memory, we will continue to pray for his family and for the journey they now face without him.”
“We are deeply saddened that we have lost Jeff Austin,” tweeted the group Umphrey’s McGee. “The UM organization mourns his passing, while celebrating the joy & laughter he brought to so many of us.”

At the time of in a club called the Verve, Austin met Adam Aijala and Ben Kaufmann, with whom he and Johnston founded the Yonder Mountain String Band. In late 2013, Austin declared that he would be taking a break from Yonder due to the pending birth of his child. As of April 23, 2014, Austin left the Yonder Mountain String Band.
Austin is survived by his wife, Devlyn, and three kids — Lily Rose age of 12, Penelope age of 5 and Jude Patrick is just age of 2.
Jeff Austin released his solo debut album on Yep Roc Records on February 10, 2015. The project, titled The Simple Truth, features the likes of Cody Dickinson, the Royal Horns, Todd Snider, Jennifer Hartswick, Brendan Bayliss and Sarah Siskind, as well as Jeff’s touring band – Danny Barnes, Ross Martin, and Eric Thorin.
On June 22, the singer declared by his Facebook page that he cancelled to perform at the ROMP Festival, because of a medical emergency. The festival, which takes place in Yellow Creek Park from Wednesday to Saturday, acknowledged Austin’s absence from the four-day event on their website.
“As many of you know, ROMP alum and favorite Jeff Austin experienced a medical emergency and had to cancel upcoming dates, including his appearance at ROMP,” the statement read.
“Our thoughts are with Jeff and his family, join us in sending well wishes his way. Please consider giving back to a musician who has enlightened us all with his artistry,” it added, with a donation button to Sweet Reliefs Musicians Fund.
