Einstein was born November 20, 1942 in Los Angeles, California to a Jewish family. His parents were the comic Harry Einstein and Thelma Leeds. Harry Einstein was well known for playing the character Parkyakarkus on radio and in the movies, and Thelma Leeds was the actress-singer.
