Tom Cruise’s love interest Charlie and the character of flight instructor Charlie Blackwood – played by original star Kelly McGillis in the film “Top Gun”.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight Friday, McGillis revealed that she was not invited to participate in the sequel to the 1986 blockbuster in which she portrayed Pete “Maverick” Mitchell’s love interest, Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood.
“You know what, I don’t know how to answer that because one, it hasn’t happened,”
What Kelly Mcgillis Said About “Top Gun: Maverick”:
The 62-year-old said when asked if fans would see her at any promotional events for the upcoming “Top Gun: Maverick” movie. “Two, if and when it did happen, I would have to assess where I am, what I’m doing, what’s going on … I can’t project what I would or wouldn’t do in the future. I have no idea because I don’t know where I’ll be.”
McGillis added: “Movies are odd things. I don’t really keep in touch with anybody. I think I’ve spoken to a couple of people occasionally, but the truth is, movies are very odd work situations because you have a lot of people who come together from all different parts of the world.”
McGillis wishes the best to Jennifer Connelly, 48, who sets to play the love interest in “Top Gun: Maverick” and McGillis said she’s “so glad that she got that opportunity.”
“I think just my priorities in life changed,” she said. “It wasn’t like a major decision that I made to leave, it was just that other things became more important. I love acting, I love what I do, I love doing theater, but I don’t know. To me, my relationships to other people became far more important than my relationship to fame.”
Actress Kelly Mcgillis best known for her film role as Rachel Lapp in Witness (1985) with Harrison Ford, her role as Charlie in Top Gun (1986) with Tom Cruise, and her role as Kathryn Murphy in The Accused (1988) with Jodie Foster.
Kelly Mcgillis married fellow Juilliard student Boyd Black in 1979, but the couple separated in 1981. She married Fred Tillman in 1989, and they have two daughters.The couple divorced in 2002. McGillis came out as a lesbian in April 2009 during an interview with SheWired.
McGillis now stays in North Carolina with her two children and said she left Hollywood as part of her journey toward sobriety.
